We first met when we were just five, brought together by our parents’ friendship. Growing up in the same church and schools, we never thought about dating. But just before her 16th birthday, she asked me to take her on her first date. She wanted a good time with someone she trusted, so I turned to my “101 Great Date Ideas” book and picked one I could afford: a trip to the mall and tossing pennies into a fountain.
On the night of the date, I borrowed my mom’s station wagon and took her to the local dollar theater. Afterward, we wandered through the mall, but the fountain was roped off for repairs. Improvising, we stood in the parking garage and tossed our pennies into a puddle below. By the 49th penny, we were out, though I thought the roll should’ve had 50. Laughing, we shrugged it off, and the night ended with a quiet ride home, our friendship still intact.
Years later, after marriage and two kids, on our 10th anniversary, she gave me a card. Inside was a penny, punched with a heart, and a page from her old journal. It told the story of our first date, where she’d secretly pocketed that 50th penny. Her wish was simple—to marry someone like me. With a smile, she said, “Thanks for making my wish come true,” and kissed me.
