13 Truck Drivers Turn Heads After Blocking Highway To Form ‘Safety Net’
In April 2018, 13 truck drivers in Michigan turned heads when they helped prevent a suicide attempt on Interstate 696. Police responded to a man threatening to jump off an overpass and devised a unique plan to mitigate the risk of a fall. Michigan State Police flagged down several semi-trucks, which formed a safety net by parking beneath the bridge in the eastbound lanes. The westbound lanes were closed as additional trucks arrived, and the drivers remained in place for hours while negotiators worked to safely escort the man to a hospital.
The act of heroism, which occurred during the early morning hours, was captured on camera and later went viral after Michigan State Police shared the images. The department praised the efforts of local officers and reminded the public about the availability of mental health resources.
