Alex Dodman, a father of two from Essex, built his dream pool in his backyard with the help of YouTube tutorials, despite having no prior experience. Inspired by a video of a woman constructing her own pool, Dodman rented a mini digger and started digging a large hole in his garden. This project was part of a series of DIY renovations he had done since moving into a fixer-upper home in 2018. After successfully adding a gym, cinema room, and home office, he realized his home had more than doubled in value due to his efforts.
In January 2020, Dodman began the pool project, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed material availability. However, he turned this setback into an opportunity by sourcing cheaper materials from Facebook Marketplace. Through determination and creativity, he was able to complete the pool, making it a tropical paradise in his own backyard.
