Savannah Miller said she once forgot about a tampon for a whole month and the smell was so awful she said it was like a rat had crawled inside and died. She called it traumatising and said it was also kind of humbling looking back.

She explained that she had put one in before going out with friends at the end of her period and then totally forgot it was there. Because the string was gone and no blood showed, she said she didn’t see it at all.

Soon after she felt sick and the smell started but she thought maybe it was just old period smell. She kept putting in new tampons without knowing and that made things worse.

Doctors at first told her it was BV and even checked for STDs but nothing explained the smell. On her third visit they noticed cotton in a urine sample and asked if she could have left one in by mistake.

Savannah said: “I didn’t think so, but I was like, possibly?!” She told them she was desperate to get rid of it. The tampon was finally found deep up in her cervix and she even joked: “The doctor had to fish it out of my ovaries.”

She was fortunate because she didn’t end up with toxic shock syndrome, but they gave her antibiotics just to be safe. Later she shared the story on TikTok and joked: “Too toxic for toxic shock syndrome I guess.”

Savannah said she hopes telling it might help someone else be more careful. She added: “I hope this isn’t embarrassing but if it helps someone then I’m glad!”
