In today’s social media-driven world, people are often judged by appearance alone. For those who don’t fit society’s idea of “perfection,” the scrutiny can be harsh. Karine de Souza knows this better than most.
The 33-year-old Brazilian lives with Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a rare genetic condition diagnosed when she was just three years old. This “one-in-a-million” disorder leaves her unable to repair skin damage caused by UV rays, making her highly susceptible to painful sunburns and life-threatening skin cancer. Even a few minutes outdoors can be dangerous. To protect herself, Karine covers her skin in SPF100 sunscreen, sometimes even while inside her home.
Her condition has forced a lifetime of medical interventions—she has undergone 130 surgical procedures, including the removal of her lower lip and part of her nose, to treat sun-induced lesions. Despite these physical challenges, Karine has faced social and emotional struggles as well. She has endured stares on the street, verbal abuse in her community, and online harassment because of her appearance.
Yet Karine’s spirit remains unbroken. She approaches life with optimism and resilience and has found love and support in her husband, Edmilson, who discovered her story online. Drawn to her courage and strength, he has been her steadfast partner through every challenge.
