President Donald Trump is celebrating Texas lawmakers’ approval of a sweeping redistricting plan that could add up to five new GOP-leaning congressional seats, calling it a “Big WIN” for Republicans.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump praised Texas for “never letting us down” and framed the move as a turning point not just for the state but for the nation. He urged other Republican-led states such as Florida and Indiana to follow suit, claiming the strategy could secure as many as 100 additional seats nationwide if paired with eliminating mail-in voting and returning to paper ballots.
The Texas House approved the new congressional map Wednesday in an 88–52 party-line vote, brushing aside Democratic objections. Democrats blasted the plan as discriminatory, arguing it dilutes minority voting power and vowed to fight it in court. “This process was a total sham from the very beginning,” said Rep. Jon Rosenthal, calling it a “racist power grab.”
Republicans countered that the map reflects population growth and ensures fair representation. Meanwhile, California Democrats unveiled their own redistricting plan, escalating the partisan fight over control of Congress ahead of 2026.
