Losing a child is every parent’s worst nightmare, and Sylvester Stallone faced this tragedy in 2012 when his firstborn son, Sage Stallone, died at just 36.

Rumors swirled immediately—suicide, substance abuse, depression—but those close to Sage dismissed them. His lawyer and friend, George Braunstein, said Sage neither abused drugs nor alcohol, describing him as sensitive, creative, and full of life. Stallone himself pleaded for compassion, asking the public to respect Sage’s memory and support his ex-wife, Sasha Czack.
Sage had followed in his father’s footsteps, acting alongside him in Rocky V and Daylight, while also carving his own path as co-founder of Grindhouse Releasing, a company dedicated to film restoration. His unexpected death stunned Hollywood and devastated Stallone.
Weeks later, the truth emerged: Sage had undergone dental surgery, against his mother’s advice, having multiple teeth removed. While painkillers were detected in his system, the official cause of death was atherosclerosis—hardening of the arteries leading to a fatal heart attack.
Though Stallone returned to work to cope, he admitted nothing could ever ease the pain of losing his first child.
