Nineteen-year-old UNC sophomore Noah Nunney never imagined move-in weekend would turn tragic. While waiting on campus to meet his family, he learned their vehicle had crashed nearby. “When I arrived at the scene, I thought all four were gone,” he told PEOPLE.
The Aug. 15 accident occurred as his parents and younger siblings left their hotel. Authorities said the vehicle struck trees, went down an embankment, and hit a large tree. His mother, Maria, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene. His father, Donald, 55, suffered a heart attack believed to have triggered the crash and later died at the hospital.
The Nunneys’ younger children, ages 9 and 15, survived but were badly injured. One sustained multiple fractures, while the other suffered a brain injury. Nunney has vowed to prioritize their recovery. “Seeing them improve has really helped me improve mentally,” he said.
Maria and Donald were beloved Cleveland teachers remembered for their dedication and kindness. A GoFundMe for the family has raised over $350,000. Though Noah plans to pause school this semester, he hopes to honor his parents’ legacy by finishing his degree.
