Federal prosecutors have announced new charges against a Cincinnati man already tied to a downtown brawl.
“According to the superseding indictment, Mathews is responsible for conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl,” U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II said. “He is also charged with operating a premises on Kenton Street in Cincinnati for the purpose of trafficking narcotics.”
Mathews, described as a primary “coordinator” of the July 26 fight outside LoVe nightclub, had been free on bond after earlier charges of aggravated riot and assault. He was arrested Aug. 14 by federal agents and Hamilton County Sheriff’s RENU task force. Three other men face conspiracy charges as well.
Mathews had previously posted $100,000 bond after his July 30 arrest. He and five others were indicted on multiple counts of assault and rioting tied to the viral 3 a.m. beating. His bond remains set at $100,000.
He is the second suspect federally charged, though prosecutors say those counts are unrelated to the melee. Meanwhile, one victim, Alex Tchervinski, has also been charged with disorderly conduct, sparking criticism from his attorney.
