Dogs have a funny way of greeting each other — usually by sniffing rear ends. But when your pup directs that behavior toward a person’s crotch, it can feel downright awkward.
So, why do they do this? The answer lies in their extraordinary sense of smell. With about 220 million scent receptors (compared to a human’s five million), dogs explore and understand the world primarily through their noses. Strong odors naturally attract them, and the crotch area, home to apocrine sweat glands, gives off a particularly potent scent. For medium to large dogs, it’s also the most accessible spot, which explains why they head straight there.

Although this behavior is completely normal, it can make guests uncomfortable. Instead of scolding your dog, try redirecting their curiosity. Snuffle mats, puzzle toys, and nosework games give them healthier outlets for sniffing. Teaching polite greetings, like sitting when visitors arrive, can also prevent awkward encounters.
At the end of the day, crotch sniffing isn’t rudeness — it’s instinct. With patience and positive reinforcement, you can guide your pup toward friendlier, less embarrassing greetings.
