At least 16 remains have been discovered in the same bayou, prompting Houston authorities to address worries about a possible serial killer on the loose.
The 16th body to be removed from the water was found by a dive team on October 8, shortly after 9 a.m., in White Oak Bayou, which is close to Marie Street in Houston, Texas, according to Fox 26 Houston.
There are no overt indications of foul play, and the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences has not yet identified the cause of his death.
In the week of September 15, five bodies were found in the bayou, and on September 26, a sixth body was discovered. Police have not connected the fatalities, and autopsy findings are still waiting.
Houston locals have been left wondering if a potential serial killer might be responsible because to the frequency of discovery, but authorities are warning people not to believe the rumors.
While describing the situation as ‘alarming’, Mayor John Whitmire has said that ‘enough is enough with misinformation’ and ‘wild speculation’ from social media, adding in a press conference on September 23: “We do not have any evidence that there is a serial killer loose in Houston, Texas.”
“If there was, you would hear it from me first,” he went on.
“So, I’m before you today to let you know that enough is enough of wild speculation. It’s very frustrating to me to be at home, watch the news, or social media, and see people spread what I know to be false,” Whitmire said.
The mayor then emphasized how Houston’s 2,500 miles of waterways can tragically lead to a high rate of unintentional deaths, especially among the local homeless population.
He asserted that ‘friends and acquaintances do not take him to a funeral home’ when homeless persons pass away from illnesses.
There was no evidence “to suggest that any of these incidents are connected,” Whitmire added.
The head of the department’s homicide division, Police Captain Salam Zia, also affirmed that there isn’t anything connecting the incidents at this time.
“There is no evidence, and I repeat no evidence, to suggest that any of these incidents are connected,” Diaz said, adding that ‘it’s important to rely on verified information and investigations’.
The victims, according to Fox Houston 26, are both male and female and range in age from their twenties to their sixties. One of the victims has been identified as 20-year-old student Jade McKissic, whose remains were found on September 15 following her abduction on September 11.
Serial killer suspicions are not exclusive to Houston; Austin people have also voiced similar concerns following the recovery of multiple victims from Lady Bird Lake in the last three years.
