Chad Dunbar was 45 when unexplained calf pain led to the discovery of an aggressive lung cancer that shocked everyone who knew him. As a lifelong non-smoker and avid mountain biker, Chad seemed the epitome of health, riding thousands of miles annually. Yet, in 2023, doctors found advanced lung cancer caused by a rare mutation called RET, often seen in non-smokers.
His cancer spread aggressively to multiple organs before it was caught, explaining confusing symptoms like leg swelling rather than typical lung problems. Targeted treatments initially brought hope by shrinking tumors and clearing spots in his brain and liver. However, new genetic changes soon complicated his condition, and doctors gave him just a small chance of long-term survival.
Chad faced his diagnosis with courage, focusing on his family and fighting to enjoy each day. He died in June 2025, leaving behind a legacy of strength and a message that lung cancer doesn’t only affect smokers, and that even subtle symptoms should never be ignored
