Afghan Man Faces Trial for Deadly Stabbing Attack in Germany

An Afghan man accused of killing a two-year-old boy and a man in a stabbing attack

earlier this year goes on trial today in Aschaffenburg, southern Germany.

The January 22 assault shocked the country after the attacker targeted a group of toddlers in a park,

injuring three others, including a teacher and a 72-year-old man who tried to help.

The suspect, 28-year-old Enamullah O., has a history of mental illness.

Prosecutors said an expert found he was not criminally responsible, and they seek to have him confined to a psychiatric facility.

Authorities confirmed there was no extremist motive.

Officials had previously failed to deport him to Bulgaria in 2023, and he had earlier threatened another asylum center resident with a knife.

The tragedy fueled political outrage, prompting calls for stricter asylum rules and tighter border controls across Germany.
