A tragic late-night crash on October 7 occurred when a Jeep struck a horse-drawn Amish buggy on State Road 218 near Berne, Indiana.

The impact shattered the buggy and scattered debris across the roadway, turning the quiet rural scene into a major emergency response.

The buggy carried nine people, including six children. Seven were hospitalized — driver Ruben L.M. Schwartz, 32,

was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital, while Joseph L.M. Schwartz, 20, and five minors were taken to Parkview Hospital.

Two others, including a 2-year-old and Saraetta L. Schwartz, declined treatment.

Authorities said the Jeep, driven by Bradley J. Ocilka, 33, of Kentucky, struck the buggy from behind.

Ocilka underwent a legal blood draw, and the crash remains under investigation.

The Adams County Amish community is mourning deeply.

Officials urge drivers to slow down and stay alert for horse-drawn buggies, especially at night.
