Supreme Court Delivers Major Immigration Victory for Trump Administration
In a landmark 8–1 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has allowed
President Donald Trump’s administration to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
for about 300,000 Venezuelan migrants, overturning a lower court’s injunction.
The ruling reverses a March decision by Judge Edward Chen,
who had blocked Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s plan to revoke TPS, calling it racially motivated.
The Supreme Court disagreed, ruling that the lower court had overreached its authority.
Solicitor General John Sauer argued that TPS decisions are matters of executive discretion tied to national security and foreign policy.
The Court sided with that view, reaffirming presidential power over immigration policy.
Secretary Noem had ended Venezuela’s TPS in February, citing that the country “no longer meets the conditions” for protection. The move overturns Biden-era extensions that kept TPS active through 2026.
The decision marks a major policy shift and one of Trump’s most decisive legal victories since returning to office.
