What began as a peaceful day at Banff National Park quickly turned tragic when a sudden rockslide struck near Bow Glacier Falls — one of Alberta’s most popular hiking destinations. Witnesses described hearing a deep rumble before massive rocks tumbled down the mountainside, sending hikers running for safety. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but at least one person lost their life and others were left shaken as dust filled the air.
Authorities have temporarily closed the Bow Glacier Falls trail while geologists assess the area’s stability. Officials believe recent heavy rains and natural erosion may have weakened the cliffside. “This is a powerful reminder that even beautiful places can be unpredictable,” said Park Superintendent David Greene.
The victim, a visitor to Banff, was reportedly on the marked trail when the slide occurred. Local residents and parkgoers have left flowers and messages at the visitor center in tribute.
Experts urge caution in mountain regions, emphasizing that nature’s beauty and danger often coexist — a humbling reminder of its power and fragility.
