The Day I Forgot My Wife’s

My wife’s 37th birthday coincided with my best friend’s wedding. I knew it would be tricky to manage both, but I assumed the wedding was a one-time event while birthdays came around every year. “Sorry,” I told her. “He’ll get married once, while you’ll have birthdays every year.” She smiled, understanding, though I sensed a hint of disappointment.

That afternoon, as I sat through the wedding ceremony, my phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number. I opened it, and my blood ran cold: “Your wife is dead.” For a few seconds, I couldn’t move. Panic flooded me. I quietly slipped out of the reception hall, trying not to draw attention, my hands trembling as I dialed her number repeatedly. Each call went straight to voicemail. My mind raced—regret, confusion, and sheer fear swirled together.

I sped to our home, expecting the worst. Cars were parked outside, lights on, but nothing seemed amiss from the outside. I flung open the door, heart hammering—and froze. A chorus of voices shouted, “Surprise!” My wife stood at the center of the room, laughing at my shocked expression, surrounded by friends and family. It was a surprise party, carefully orchestrated with my sister. The mysterious text? A clever ploy from a temporary number designed to make sure I came home early. I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or both, but the feeling of relief and joy was overwhelming.

Later, my wife explained that she wanted to teach me a light-hearted lesson about priorities. The plan worked—not because of the scare, but because it reminded me how precious these moments together were. I realized that life’s celebrations, shared with loved ones, mattered far more than any single event I might prioritize over them. That birthday became unforgettable, not because of the cake or decorations, but because it reminded me how important it is to cherish time with the people we love, to be present, and to never take a single moment for granted.
