A man who lost both of his arms in a terrifying farming accident in North Dakota incredibly managed to get them reattached, thanks to his quick thinking – and a pencil.

In 1992, John Thompson was alone when his shirt got caught in the shaft of a tractor – and horrifically tore both limbs from his body just below the shoulder.

Despite the instant trauma, the teen managed to stagger 100 yards into his home, using his mouth to open the door.

When faced with trying to call emergency services, John managed to grip a pencil in his mouth, helping him punch in the numbers.

He even took himself off to the bathroom so he didn’t bleed on his mom’s carpet.

Against the odds, not only did John survive but both of his arms were reattached after a lengthy six-hour surgery.
