Emergency Response Underway After UPS Plane Crash Near SDF Airport”

Chaos Near Louisville Airport as UPS Cargo Plane Crashes in Flames

Chaos erupted near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening when a UPS cargo plane went down in flames shortly after takeoff. Thick black smoke billowed across the skyline as explosions echoed through nearby neighborhoods. Emergency crews rushed to contain the inferno in what officials are calling one of the worst aviation accidents in recent memory.

According to federal authorities, the aircraft was a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter operating as UPS Flight 2976, bound for Honolulu. The crash occurred around 5:15 p.m. local time, just moments after departure from the airport’s main runway.

Investigators say the aircraft experienced a catastrophic mechanical failure during takeoff — witnesses reported seeing the left engine detach from the wing, followed by a massive fire. The plane plummeted into an industrial area near the UPS Worldport facility, igniting multiple secondary explosions as fuel tanks and nearby structures caught fire.

The Louisville Metro Police Department confirmed that several agencies responded immediately, including fire, EMS, and airport emergency teams. Authorities established a five-mile shelter-in-place radius around the crash site due to heavy smoke and hazardous materials.

Governor Andy Beshear said first responders were “working heroically under dangerous conditions,” and urged residents to keep those affected in their thoughts.

Casualties and Injuries

As of late Tuesday, officials confirmed that at least 13 people were killed, including all three crew members aboard the plane. Several others on the ground lost their lives when the aircraft struck buildings near the airport’s perimeter. Fifteen more were hospitalized with burns and trauma injuries; two remained in critical condition overnight.
