Have you noticed faint or deep vertical lines running from the base to the tip of your nails? These are called vertical nail ridges, and they often become more visible with age. While they can look alarming, they’re usually harmless and simply reflect the body’s natural aging process.
As we get older, the cells that produce keratin — the main protein in nails — begin to grow unevenly. This causes tiny ridges to appear, much like wrinkles on the skin. However, dryness, dehydration, or nutrient deficiencies (such as low biotin, zinc, or iron) can make them more noticeable.
In some cases, deeper or irregular ridges may signal underlying health issues like thyroid imbalance, poor circulation, or arthritis. If ridges are accompanied by pain, discoloration, or nail splitting, it’s wise to see a doctor.
To care for aging nails, stay hydrated, eat nutrient-rich foods, and moisturize daily with creams or oils containing vitamin E. Avoid harsh chemicals and wear gloves while cleaning.
With gentle care and attention, your nails can remain strong, smooth, and healthy — no matter your age.
