It was an ordinary afternoon — the kind that slips by unnoticed. I was tired, distracted, and lost in my thoughts as I rushed through the grocery store. Nothing about the day felt memorable. At self-checkout, I scanned my items, grabbed my bags, and was halfway out the door when a woman softly called after me.
“Excuse me — your receipt.”
She handed it to me with a gentle smile. I thanked her, tucked it away, and moved on, never imagining her small gesture carried something more.
Hours later, unpacking groceries at home, I pulled out the receipt to throw it away. That’s when I noticed the quick, uneven handwriting across the back:
Check your back seat.
My heart jumped. I stepped outside, uneasy, and opened my car door. There, wedged between the seats, was my wallet — everything I thought was in my bag. Relief flooded me.
That stranger had seen it fall, yet instead of shouting or chasing me, she chose a quiet kindness: a brief note on a scrap of paper.
I still keep that receipt. The ink is fading, but the reminder remains strong — goodness is quiet, present, and often found in the smallest acts of care.
