THIS IS WHAT MY HUSBAND AND KIDS LEFT FOR ME TO COME HOME TO AFTER
Sarah, a hardworking mother of four, was at her wit’s end. Despite her grueling hours in real estate, she found herself burdened with the lion’s share of household chores, while her pleas for help from her husband, Mark, and their kids often went unheeded. Mark, who worked at a shipyard, and their children—13-year-old twins Emma and Ethan, 12-year-old Lily, and 8-month-old Mia—seemed oblivious to her exhaustion.
A Battle for Balance Both Sarah and Mark clock in 50-60 hour workweeks, but while Mark enjoys weekends off, Sarah does not. She had implemented a chore system to teach her kids responsibility, but since Mia’s birth, everyone’s efforts had dwindled, including Mark’s. He often spent his evenings lounging on the couch, phone in hand, while the kids were engrossed in video games or makeup tutorials. The house, though not filthy, was perpetually cluttered, and the state of the kitchen drove Sarah to the brink.
Reaching the Breaking Point One weekend, Sarah’s frustration boiled over. The kitchen was a battlefield of dinner remnants and piled dishes. “Mark, I can’t keep doing this,” she said, her voice trembling with anger. “Every day I come home to the same mess. What do you even do all day?”
Mark, barely looking up from his phone, retorted, “I work too, Sarah. I’m tired when I get home and would love to just rest on the weekends.”
Sarah’s frustration turned to exasperation. “And I’m not? I work just as many hours as you, if not more! But somehow, I am the only one who cares about this house being livable.”
Mark’s annoyance was evident. “I do my part. But sometimes I need a break too.”
“A break? You think I don’t need a break?” Sarah’s voice rose. “I can’t even cook dinner without washing a sink full of dishes first. The kids have chores, you have chores, but nothing gets done unless I nag everyone. I’m tired of being the bad guy.”
Their argument echoed through the house, ending with Mark reluctantly doing the dishes and tidying up. Yet, this was a temporary fix; the next day was no different.
Taking a Stand Before leaving for work, Sarah reminded her family to complete their chores. “You guys better have your chores done by the time I get home,” she said, receiving the usual “Yes, ma’am” in response.
After a long day, she texted Mark to ask about dinner preferences and picked up their requests from the grocery store. Returning home, she was greeted by the same disheartening scene: dishes piled in the sink, laundry unattended, and Mark on the couch. Setting the groceries down, she packed a bag for Mia and told Mark, “Have at it. I’m going to Applebee’s.”
Mark, surprised, called her 20 minutes later. “I washed the dishes. I’m sorry. I was super tired today.”
Sarah’s patience was thin. “You use that excuse all the time. There are three older kids with chores, and you couldn’t even tell them to do anything?”
“I know. I’m sorry. I’m trying to work on it. Can you just come home? I don’t know how to make this dish,” he pleaded.
“It’s a complicated dish, but you can Google it or find tutorials on YouTube. So, no. I’m enjoying my steak and shrimp with Mia. You and the kids can fend for yourselves. Apology or not, I’m not letting you off the hook this time.”
A Lesson Learned When Sarah returned home, the groceries were put away, and the family had settled for grilled cheese and cereal. The tension was palpable as they sat around the table. “Everyone should know that this is how it will be every single time you don’t do your chores,” she stated firmly.
Mark looked up, tired but defiant. “Sarah, we get it. But was it really necessary to leave like that? You could have just told us to get it done, and we would have.”
“I have told you. Over and over again. And nothing changes. I’m tired of being the only one who cares enough to do something about it.”
Emma and Lily apologized, admitting they didn’t realize the importance of their chores. Mark suggested finding a better way to handle things, emphasizing the need for communication.
Sarah, still frustrated, agreed. “Yes, but only if everyone truly steps up. I can’t do this alone.”
