What began as a strange and almost calm interaction inside a local bank turned into a dangerous and chaotic gunfight in the streets of Escambia, Florida. Twenty-six-year-old Dmytryk Carter was shot multiple times by deputies after refusing to comply with repeated commands and pulling a gun on officers. Miraculously, no deputies were injured, and Carter survived his wounds. The incident has since sparked debate about the appropriate use of tasers versus firearms in high-risk encounters.
A Strange Request Inside a Bank
On the morning of October 27, Carter walked into a nearby bank and delivered a chilling yet oddly calm statement to employees:
“I need you to call the police. I don’t want to take it out on y’all.”
Understandably alarmed, the bank staff immediately dialed 911. By the time Escambia County deputies were dispatched to the scene, Carter had already walked a few blocks away from the bank. Officers located him not far from the original location, and that’s where the dashcam footage begins.
Tension Builds on the Street
As deputies arrived, Carter informed them he was carrying a firearm. But instead of following commands, he started arguing. Officers repeatedly instructed him to get down on his knees, keep his hands visible, and not to touch the gun.
“Get down on your knees!” an officer shouted as another warned, “Don’t touch that gun!” Deputies quickly spread out, treating the situation as armed and dangerous. The lead officer chose to deploy a taser instead of his firearm, hoping to subdue Carter non-lethally.
But within seconds, Carter pulled a handgun from his pocket and opened fire. The officers reacted instantly, returning shots while taking cover. The exchange lasted only moments but was deadly intense.
The taser’s shock likely threw off Carter’s aim, sparing the deputies from injury. Carter was shot multiple times, survived, and now faces several attempted murder charges.
