Career Highlights
Blake began his Hollywood career in the late 1930s. His acting debut came in 1939 with an uncredited role in Bridal Suite. Over his extensive career, he earned nearly 150 acting credits. Notable roles include In Cold Blood and Baretta, which defined his career in the ’60s and ’70s.
He received four Emmy nominations and won one for Baretta. His final dramatic role was in the 1997 film Lost Highway.
Controversy and Legacy
Blake’s later life was marred by controversy. His second wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley, was found dead in his car in May 2001. The LAPD reported she was “slumped in the front seat.” Blake, who had been married to Bakley for just one year, was shocked when he was charged with her murder 11 months later. Officer Don Cox confirmed Blake’s detention at the time.
Blake consistently denied any involvement in Bakley’s death, claiming he found her dead after returning to the car. Despite his explanations and a year spent in jail before posting a $1.5 million bond, Blake’s reputation suffered. In a 2003 interview with Barbara Walters, Blake suggested that Bakley’s past may have led to her death, stating that someone from her past might have been responsible.
On March 29, 2005, Blake was acquitted of murder. However, his reputation never fully recovered.
