The Lies Between Us
“Our Long-Distance Relationship Was Thriving—Until I Discovered He Was Living a Double Life”

The distance never bothered me—not at first, anyway. When Eric and I started dating, we were both aware that our relationship would be anything but conventional. He lived in New York, while I was anchored to my life in San Francisco. We’d met at a conference, shared a whirlwind weekend together, and against all odds, decided to give it a try. Love, after all, could conquer anything. Or so I thought.
For the first year, our relationship felt like a fairy tale. We talked every day, our conversations ranging from the mundane to the profound. Every night, we’d FaceTime until one of us fell asleep, the other still connected, watching the peaceful rise and fall of a chest from thousands of miles away. We planned visits, counting down the days until we could be together in person again. And when we were together, it was magical—like the world had paused just for us.
I fell in love with Eric’s voice, his laugh, the way he made me feel like the most important person in the world, even from afar. He was attentive, sending surprise packages and thoughtful messages at random times of the day. It didn’t matter that we were separated by time zones and miles; we made it work because we believed in what we had.
But then, little things started to change. I noticed he’d become more distant, his responses less frequent and more distracted. Our conversations, once full of warmth and affection, began to feel like a chore, like he was merely going through the motions. When I’d ask him about it, he’d brush it off, blaming work stress or a bad day.
“You know I’m just tired, babe,” he’d say, his voice laced with irritation that hadn’t been there before. “I’m under a lot of pressure. Don’t take it personally.”
I wanted to believe him. I wanted to believe that we were still the same couple who could weather any storm. But a nagging feeling began to grow inside me, a feeling that something wasn’t right. I tried to push it aside, telling myself that I was overthinking, that long-distance was bound to have its rough patches.
Then came the weekend I was supposed to visit him. We’d planned it for months, and I was counting down the days. But two days before my flight, he called and canceled.
“I’m sorry, Emily. Work is just crazy right now, and I can’t take the time off,” he said, his voice flat, emotionless. “We’ll reschedule soon, I promise.”
I was crushed but tried to hide my disappointment. “It’s okay,” I replied, though it wasn’t. “We’ll make it work.”
But as soon as I hung up the phone, that nagging feeling in my gut intensified. Something wasn’t adding up. And so, against my better judgment, I started digging.
It began innocently enough—a quick search of his social media, something I rarely did because I trusted him completely. But then I noticed something odd: a woman’s profile that seemed to be linked to his in subtle ways. She’d liked nearly every one of his posts, and there were comments from her that felt… too familiar.
My heart raced as I clicked on her profile. There she was, smiling in pictures—pictures that included Eric. The captions told a story that I wasn’t part of: “Weekend getaway with my love,” “Our anniversary dinner,” and, most gut-wrenching of all, “So lucky to call him mine.”
I felt the world shift beneath my feet. I read and reread the posts, each one stabbing at my heart like a knife. Eric, my Eric, was living a double life. He wasn’t just distant because of work or stress—he was distant because he was with someone else, someone who believed she was the only woman in his life.
Numbly, I scrolled through their pictures, a montage of lies playing out in front of me. The woman had no idea I existed, just as I had no idea about her. We were both victims of his deception, living in parallel worlds that he had carefully crafted.
I confronted him that night. I didn’t wait for explanations or excuses—I didn’t need them. The evidence was clear, and so was his betrayal. “How could you do this to me? To us?” I asked, my voice shaking with a mix of fury and heartbreak.

“Emily, I…” He stumbled over his words, the truth finally caught in his throat. “I never wanted to hurt you.”
“But you did,” I snapped, tears streaming down my face. “You’ve been living a lie, Eric. Our entire relationship was a lie.”
He tried to apologize, to rationalize his actions, but there was nothing he could say to undo the damage. The man I had loved, the man I had trusted with my heart, was a stranger—a cruel stranger who had played me like a fool.
In the days that followed, I cut all ties with him. I blocked his number, deleted his pictures, and did my best to erase every trace of him from my life. But the scars remained, a reminder of how love can be twisted into something dark and deceitful.
I learned that not all fairy tales have happy endings. Sometimes, the prince is just a wolf in disguise, and the only way to save yourself is to walk away. I walked away from Eric, from the life we had planned, and from the lies that had shattered my heart. And as painful as it was, I knew it was the only choice I had left.
