A Semester of Shocks and Survival, A COLLEGE SEMESTER FILLED WITH VIOLENCE AND SURVIVAL. My first semester of college was a whirlwind of shocking events that no one seems to believe. My first semester of college was a whirlwind of shocking events that no one seems to believe. It all began when I moved to Fitchburg, Massachusetts, a town marked by poverty and decay, and took up residence in a dilapidated farmhouse. The house was shared with a recovering alcoholic, his wife, two young children, and a series of problematic individuals, including a heavy-drinking brother and a sex worker. Living conditions were grim, with no heat, limited food, and a general sense of disrepair.
The situation at home quickly fell apart. The man’s relapse into drinking led to financial hardship, the loss of basic utilities, and increasing dysfunction within the household. One night, the conflict between the man and his wife erupted into a violent confrontation in the kitchen. The scene was chaotic; the man struck his wife multiple times, kicked their small dog, and even shattered a glass door. I was frozen with fear and could only lock myself in my room as the violence continued.

The next morning, I awoke to find the house in ruins, with all my belongings either stolen or destroyed. Despite the trauma, I had to muster the strength to attend my final exams at school. This harrowing experience served as a stark reminder of life’s unpredictability and the strength needed to endure such trials.
