While living in Malaysia with my roommate Vica, our routine took an unexpected turn one October evening in 2011. Our friend Simi visited for dinner and introduced us to her friend Ryan via Skype. Ryan, a 19-year-old with a tragic backstory, seemed to be struggling with cancer and had lost his family. His online presence appeared authentic, and we accepted his friend request out of courtesy. Vica quickly became engrossed in phone conversations with Ryan, who, despite his claimed illness, never wanted to video-call.

Things took a bizarre turn when Ryan asked if his 13-year-old cousin, Kidda, could stay with us for a while. Trusting Vica, I agreed, though I noticed Kidda seemed to acquire new items like clothes and accessories in a short span. When Ryan’s calls became less frequent, Vica mentioned she had sent money to help with a parcel issue in Malaysia, which struck me as odd. My curiosity led me to investigate further, and I discovered that Ryan was a fictitious persona created by Kidda.

Determined to address the situation, Vica and I decided to reveal the truth to other affected individuals. We organized a meeting with several of them, uncovering how Kidda had used fake profiles to deceive them into sending money and sharing personal photos. At a planned gathering, Kidda was confronted with the evidence and admitted to her deceit. The situation was covered by local media, and Vica and I were advised to stay clear of further involvement. This entire episode was a profound and eye-opening experience, leaving us cautious about online interactions.
