I am often very quiet when I’m outside the home. I wish to speak, but since I’m mostly quiet, I’m ignored. It was okay at first; I also enjoyed the solitude. But soon, it began to weigh on me. During a youth program at a boarding school, students from all over the country gathered. I joined with my school group but felt like the odd one out. The entire day passed with no one speaking to me, and I was terrified to approach anyone. When I finally mustered the courage to talk to someone, they just made fun of me.
In the evenings, students were playing or chatting in groups, but my group left me behind. It wasn’t their fault. Roaming around alone, I eventually sat down. A guy sat nearby, and I tried starting a conversation. He seemed annoyed and left after a few minutes. Feeling disheartened, I wandered to a playground, sat on a swing, and listened to music, feeling utterly alone. Soon, two older guys came and sat beside me. I removed my earphones as one of them spoke to me, and to my surprise, we had the most heartwarming conversation. They treated me like an old friend, sharing stories and snacks.
Later, we decided to play carrom. We found a board and started a game in the hostel’s open space. Time flew as we played, laughed, and talked. People gathered to watch, and some even joined in. To my surprise, I played well and won! For the first time, I cracked a joke, and everyone laughed. It was the best moment of my life. We cheered each other on and enjoyed the evening, wishing each other goodnight before heading to bed. The universe took my worst day and made it the best.
