I was getting a minor medical procedure, and the nurse came in to prep me. She verified my name and said, “I’m Laura, but I was almost called Maura. The day after I was born, a baby was born in the ward and named Maura. My mother always said she wished she had known about that name sooner.”

When she checked my birthdate on the chart, she added, “That’s the day after I was born, same year. But I was born in (hospital) in (another state).”

It turned out that my mom was a nurse at that hospital and had traveled there to deliver me. We each went home and checked our birth certificates, and the details matched perfectly. This delightful coincidence made our connection special, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since. We now send each other birthday cards every year, cherishing this unique bond that started with a shared birthdate and a name that almost was.
