I’m 42 and on my fourth marriage. While that alone might raise eyebrows, what most people can’t believe is that my first three wives all passed away. My first wife died in a car accident just six months after we were married when I was 24. It was sudden and completely devastating, and at that time, I thought it was the worst loss I could ever experience.

Wife #2 and I were married for a few years before she was diagnosed with a brain tumor when I was 32. Despite everything the doctors tried, we lost her after a long and painful battle. I never thought I’d marry again, but life brought me a third partner. Tragically, she died from a stroke when I was 37, another blow that I wasn’t sure I could recover from.

Somehow, after all that, I found love again. I remarried this July. People ask me how I do it, and I think to myself, it’s not about moving on from the past but rather continuing to live while carrying it with me.
