In 2013, I turned down one of my best friends. Even though I was single, I rejected him because of our different castes and the expectations of my parents. I offered him lifelong friendship, and he accepted it. But one day, he expressed his feelings for me again, filled with insecurities, thinking I might like someone else. I assured him there was no one, but he told me he couldn’t continue our friendship. He felt trapped by the hope he still had, and he needed to move on. Being a logical thinker, he only saw life as either a “0” or “1,” and I had clearly given him a “0.” After that call, we stopped talking, and he vanished from social media.

Three years later, after my sister’s wedding, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. That night, as I sat alone, I realized how much I had hurt him and how much I missed him. I had taken him for granted. The next morning, I decided I had to see him, even if he had moved on. I created a fake Facebook account and reached out to him under the guise of needing help with a job. I learned where he worked, and soon, I booked a flight to his city. On the day I arrived, I unblocked his number and called him. He recognized my voice immediately and, within minutes, we met in his office garden. He hugged me so tightly, tears in his eyes, telling me how much he had missed me. It was an overwhelming moment.

In that garden, surrounded by the life he had built without me, I saw the love he had never stopped feeling. He had changed, matured, and yet, his affection remained the same. I knelt down and asked him to be my life partner, something I never imagined I would do. He embraced me, saying, “Your place is in my heart.” That day, we reconnected, and I realized how precious he was. He had never disturbed my life, never spoken ill of me, and respected my choices even when it hurt him deeply. Our love story might seem strange, but it taught me that true love doesn’t fade; it waits, silently and patiently, for its moment to return.
