I was driving with my heart pounding because I knew my driver’s license had expired. I had just been fired from my evening job, and my money barely covered rent and food, let alone renewing my license. I had moved to this state for university, and I was on my way to an important job interview when the flashing red and blue lights appeared behind me. As I pulled over, I dreaded what would come next.

The officer came to my window and asked why I was driving without a valid license. I explained everything—how I had lost my job, barely had enough to survive, and was heading to the interview that could turn my life around. He listened, then did something I didn’t expect. Instead of giving me a ticket or towing my car, he told me to stay calm. He parked his patrol car, got into mine, and drove me to my interview himself. I couldn’t believe it.

When we arrived, the officer even apologized to the interviewers for my being late, explaining that he had caused the delay. Thanks to him, I was accepted for the job. On top of that, I was granted a temporary driver’s license until I could afford to renew it. That officer showed me that sometimes, humanity and mercy go beyond the rules.
