Growing up, my sister was always the difficult child in our family, while I was the quiet one—meek, obedient, and constantly trying to make our parents happy. She would often fight with our mother, and one particular argument stands out in my memory. “I wish I’d never had you,” my mother screamed. My sister, defiant as ever, shouted back, “I hate you. I wish no one had a mother like you.” Little did we know, two years later, life would change for all of us.

In January 2012, my sister fell from the fourth floor while my mother and I were away. For two months, she fought for her life in the hospital, and our mother was devastated. She stopped eating, spent hours at temples, and tried everything she could to save her. When we ran out of money, my mother made the decision to travel to Delhi to get financial aid from the government. But she contracted chickenpox at the worst possible moment. Still, she endured the long journey, sick and weak, determined to save my sister.

Finally, after days of waiting, my mother got the funds processed and my sister underwent surgery. Today, my sister is alive because of that journey. Despite the hurtful words they exchanged years before, my mother risked her life to save hers. This experience taught me that love persists even in the face of conflict, and that the depth of family bonds can often be found in moments of sacrifice and hardship.
