In January 2002, Deepika Dadlani began her second term of training at the Air Force Academy, while Ronald Kevin Serrao, a senior cadet, was completing his final term. Their story began over a game of charades and quickly evolved into a deep connection. Deepika often skipped meals just to spend more time with Ron at the academy. Despite their separation after training, their bond remained strong through frequent visits and long-distance calls. Engaged in December 2004 and married in April 2006, they navigated their relationship through various postings across the U.S., cherishing every moment together.

In January 2007, Deepika and Ron celebrated his early 26th birthday together. However, on January 17th, their final conversation was filled with joy and anticipation. The next day, Deepika’s anxiety grew when she couldn’t reach Ron, and a broken rosary heightened her fears. Tragically, Ron’s combat jet exploded mid-air over a training site in California. Deepika received the heartbreaking news from her commanding officer, and her world shattered. At his funeral, she faced her grief with bravery, navigating her new life as a war widow.

Deepika’s life transformed drastically after Ron’s death. Struggling with the loss and unable to return to flying, she eventually left the Air Force and pursued an MBA. Now working in the corporate sector, she balances her professional and personal life while honoring Ron’s memory. Reflecting on her journey, Deepika speaks of her sorrow and resilience. Despite the pain, she continues to advocate for military service, inspired by her experiences and Ron’s legacy. On January 18th, we remember Flt Lt Ronald Kevin Serrao and pay tribute to both him and his courageous wife, Deepika.
