My ex filed the petition, and the lawyer called me to go over the terms. I headed to her office, feeling calm, knowing this was going to be smooth. As we sat down, the lawyer began reading out my ex’s requests.

First, 50% of all specialist medical costs? “That’s fine,” I said. Next, 50% of university and further education costs? “That’s fine,” I agreed again. Honestly, it was all reasonable, and I was happy to go along with it. The divorce felt more like a formality than a painful experience. In fact, we were both still on such good terms that she had invited me over next week to celebrate my birthday with the kids and our granddaughter. Everything was falling into place effortlessly.

Then, the lawyer paused for a second before saying, “Your wife does not request any alimony of any nature.” I leaned back, thinking for a moment, and then jokingly said, “You’re going to have to give me a little time to think about that one.” The lawyer burst out laughing, and so did I. I signed the papers without a second thought. Afterwards, we all went down to the bar, my ex included, had a drink, and then went back to work like it was just another day.
