In the middle of the night, she got up and prepared two chapatis, rolling them with a little salt since that was all they had. But just as she handed them to him, my father quietly said, “Maa, I’m not hungry. I know you haven’t eaten anything. These chapatis are for you.” He had only pretended to be hungry so his mother could eat.
