The Raccoon Stuck in My Car’s Engine, When a squeaky suspension turned into a wild surprise in the engine.
A few weeks ago, I had an annoying squeak in my Hyundai Sonata’s passenger-side front suspension. Hoping it was a simple fix, I took it to my trusted mechanic. After handing over the keys, I sat in the lounge, working while he test-drove the car to diagnose the issue. About 20 minutes later, my mechanic called out, “Ashish, come here, look at this.” This was his usual style—showing customers what was wrong with their cars firsthand. I walked over, expecting to see something wrong with the suspension. Instead, I found several mechanics huddled around the hood, which was open, but the car was still on the floor. Puzzled, I asked, “What’s going on?”
He pointed toward the engine. “There’s a raccoon in your hood!” he said. I blinked in disbelief. There, snugly wedged between the engine and air filter box, was a huge raccoon. Only its tail was visible as it held on tightly to the pipes and hoses. The mechanics tried to tug it out by its tail, but it refused to budge, clinging on for dear life. After several failed attempts, they called pest control. When the pest control guy arrived, he couldn’t believe his eyes either. He said in his 23 years of work, he had never heard of a raccoon getting stuck in a car engine. It took some effort, but eventually, they managed to safely remove the stubborn critter.
It made for a hilarious story to tell later, but in the end, I wasn’t laughing when the bill came. Apparently, raccoon removal doesn’t come cheap! Still, it’s not every day your mechanic finds a raccoon living in your car.
