However, John’s inner demons, fueled by the trauma of war and the demands of his career, led him to alcohol and infidelity. Though he loved his family, he drifted away, eventually leaving Emily for a younger woman who gave birth to his daughter.
By the time John reached his seventies, the consequences of his hard living caught up with him. His relationship with his mistress ended in betrayal, leaving him alone.
