I was born into a poor farming family, and from the very start, life dealt me a tough hand—I was blind. As people surrounded my parents, voicing their doubts about my future, some even suggested they should end my life, my parents stood firm. Their unconditional love enveloped me like a warm blanket, and despite our financial struggles, they nurtured my spirit with care and compassion.
At five years old, I joined a local school, but it quickly became a battleground for my self-esteem. I was often relegated to the back of the class, a target for cruel taunts from my peers. Overwhelmed by despair, I left school feeling defeated. My father, seeing my yearning for education, brought me to the farm, hoping to teach me about hard work. Yet, without sight, I found it difficult to contribute. Undeterred, he inquired about schools that could cater to my needs, and after much searching, I enrolled in a blind school where I thrived, completing my education with outstanding marks.
Despite my achievements, my dreams faced hurdles at every turn. After completing my tenth grade, I applied for an intermediate program but was rejected solely because of my blindness. Not one to back down, I filed a lawsuit against the education board, and after six long months, I emerged victorious. I continued my education, striving for excellence. When I aspired to study engineering at prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), I faced rejection yet again, as there were no provisions for blind students. Refusing to let that deter me, I learned about American universities that embraced inclusivity. I applied and was thrilled to receive offers from four top-tier institutions. I chose to attend MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), where I completed my higher education and received multiple job offers. However, I turned them all down, driven by the desire to make a difference back home in India.
Today, I am Bolla Srikanth, a 25-year-old entrepreneur from the Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh. I returned to India and founded a startup called Bollant Industries in Hyderabad. My company has flourished, boasting an annual turnover of 80 crore rupees. More importantly, we provide employment opportunities for many and offer free education, food, and accommodation to 3,000 underprivileged students each year. My journey from darkness to light has taught me that with determination and the right support, anything is possible.
