I never imagined my life would change because of a channel-surfing moment. It was 2004, and Susann, my wife, had seen me on TV while watching a weightlifting competition in Germany. At the time, I was competing for Austria. She tracked me down through sheer persistence, emailing Eurosport until they gave her my contact info. We finally met in Lower Austria, and it was love at first sight for both of us. We got married not long after, and I promised her that one day, I would win an Olympic medal just for her.
Then, tragedy struck. In July 2007, Susann was involved in a car accident and passed away. It felt like my world had collapsed. I buried her in her wedding dress, and I nearly gave up everything—including my career. But in the depths of my grief, I remembered the promise I made to her. That promise became my driving force, the reason I kept pushing forward when I thought I couldn’t. I trained harder than ever and qualified to represent Germany at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
At the Games, things didn’t go smoothly. I failed two out of three snatch attempts, and my chances for gold looked bleak. But I wasn’t just competing for myself—I was competing for Susann. With every bit of strength I had left, I lifted 258 kilograms in the clean and jerk, securing the gold medal. As I stood on the podium, listening to the German anthem, all I could think about was her. I had kept my promise. I had brought the Olympic medal home—for Susann.
