In 11th grade, I decided to pursue science and replaced biology with computer science. The class was mostly boys—96 of them, and only 4 girls, including me. From day one, the boys dominated the classroom, treating us like we didn’t belong. I’ll never forget one boy confidently saying, “Girls don’t belong here.” It hurt, but I kept my head down, determined to show them that I deserved to be there just as much as anyone else
Throughout the year, I worked harder than ever. I put in extra hours, pushing myself to master every concept, while those same boys mocked and dismissed us. I didn’t let it get to me; I knew my time would come. When exam season arrived, I felt ready, though the pressure was immense. I wasn’t just fighting for my grade—I was fighting to prove a point.
When the results were announced, I had topped the class in computer science. Out of the top five students, four of us were girls. During the awards ceremony, I received a trophy and gave a short speech. I ended it by saying, “I’d like to dedicate this award to everyone who thought I didn’t belong here.” The look on that boy’s face was priceless. Success had spoken for itself, louder than any words ever could.
