I first learned about his incredible resilience after reading his autobiography, The Test of My Life. While we celebrated his boundaries and wickets during that unforgettable tournament, we had no idea about the battle he was quietly fighting. Throughout the World Cup, he was struggling to breathe after just a few sprints. Despite vomiting, coughing, and feeling constant breathlessness, he remained a dynamic fielder, a fierce bowler, and a brilliant batsman.
As the team inched toward a second World Cup victory, a massive tumor, pressing against his lung and artery, grew inside him. It caused him sleepless nights, intense discomfort, and yet, he still claimed multiple Man-of-the-Match awards. After the tournament, doctors told him that he could’ve died from a heart attack at any moment due to the tumor’s pressure on his artery—and no one knew he was battling cancer the entire time.
Even with all he endured, he writes that if given the chance, he wouldn’t have changed a thing. For me, his strength and determination in the face of both personal and professional challenges are truly inspirational.
