Asheville mother recounts last moments with son before he was swept away by Helene floods: ‘He became my hero’
As Hurricane Helene’s devastating floods tore through North Carolina, Megan Drye, her son Micah, and her elderly parents clung to their home for safety. But the rising waters became so powerful, they destroyed the house. In that terrifying moment, Micah called out, “Jesus, please save me.”“He reached for something beyond human strength,” Drye recalled. “My son called out to God, and I believe in that moment he was rescued spiritually. He became my hero.”

As the floodwaters ripped Micah from her arms, Drye was swept downstream. After spending three agonizing hours in the water, tangled in roots and trees, she recalled hearing God’s voice telling her to be still. When she stopped fighting, she was carried to safety.A man spotted her, and rescue teams pulled her to safety. Tragically, Micah’s body was found a quarter-mile away, and her parents didn’t survive either.“My grief is beyond words,” Drye shared. “But the prayers and support I’ve received are uplifting me through this sorrow.”Helene’s remnants dropped nearly 30 inches of rain in just three days.
