Tourists on the Romanian coast were stunned when a wounded dolphin was washed ashore by the waves. Despite efforts to save it, the dolphin, identified as a common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), didn’t survive. Experts believe the injuries were likely caused by fishermen’s nets.The Black Sea is home to three marine mammals: the common dolphin, bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Each species has distinct physical traits and dietary preferences. Bottlenose dolphins and porpoises typically feed in coastal areas, while common dolphins prefer offshore zones.Common dolphins are bluish-gray to brown with distinct markings. In the Black Sea, they grow up to 2 meters long. They are sensitive to pollution and live in groups, pairs, or alone, often swimming at speeds up to 50 km/h. They dive briefly and surface frequently for air.Reaching sexual maturity at two years, females have a 10-month gestation period, weaning their young at four months. Common dolphins live around 25-30 years and feed on small fish and crustaceans, consuming about 10 kg daily.
