Little-known mistakes and bloopers in The Rifleman

The Rifleman remains one of the most beloved Westerns in TV history, celebrated for the father-son bond between Lucas McCain, played by Chuck Connors, and his son Mark, portrayed by Johnny Crawford. More than 60 years since its debut, this series still resonates, offering timeless values like respect, honesty, and perseverance. While fans cherished its powerful moments, The Rifleman was filled with fun bloopers and fascinating behind-the-scenes facts.
Set in the 1880s, the show’s wardrobe wasn’t always accurate. In the episode End of a Young Gun, for instance, Lucas wore Wranglers jeans—a brand that didn’t debut until the 1940s. Another interesting tidbit is that Connors’ son, Jeff, made a cameo as Toby in the episode Tension, a poignant addition given Jeff’s passing in 2014.
Connors almost missed the role of Lucas, declining an initial offer. Producers finally won him over after their children, fans of his role in Old Yeller, convinced them he was perfect. The series’ iconic Winchester rifle, an 1892 model, was also an anachronism but became a hallmark, previously appearing in John Wayne’s Stagecoach.
