Science Shows That Women Sleep Better Next To Dogs Than Men
It’s no surprise that sleep is essential for health, but researchers have now found a surprising factor that might boost sleep quality for women: dogs. According to a study conducted by Canisius College in New York, women sleep better next to their dogs than they do with humans or cats.
Christy Hoffman, Ph.D., an animal behaviorist and the study’s lead researcher, found that dogs provide unique benefits as sleep companions. Hoffman surveyed nearly 1,000 women in the United States, with 55% reporting that they share their bed with a dog, while 31% sleep with a cat. She explains that dogs’ sleep patterns tend to match those of humans more closely than cats’, leading to fewer disruptions.

Additionally, dogs contribute to a sense of security, as many women feel reassured that their dog will alert them to any threats. In contrast, cats’ nocturnal habits and tendency to move around can be more disruptive.
While dogs might offer a more peaceful slumber, Hoffman notes that each case is different, as some dogs might snore or overheat the bed. Further research is needed to confirm these findings objectively.
