A new symbol is showing up on some parking spaces Here’s what a handshake symbol on a parking space means
In Pembroke, Ontario, new parking spots marked with a handshake symbol are part of a community safety initiative aimed at providing secure locations for online transactions. Located outside the Pembroke OPP station, these spots are designated as part of Project Safe Trade, a program designed to reduce risks associated with buying and selling items online. The initiative offers 24/7 access to secure, monitored areas for completing transactions, particularly as online sales increase during the holiday season. Constable Mike Mahon from the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP emphasized that the initiative helps prevent fraud and that reluctance to use these safe zones could be a warning sign. While the OPP won’t mediate transactions, they will intervene if a crime occurs. In addition to using safe zones, the OPP advises meeting in public, bringing a friend, conducting exchanges in daylight, and maintaining communication records. Technology expert Carmi Levy also suggests verifying sellers and items before making purchases.
