Look closer, this Scene from ‘The Golden Girls’ is not edited and it confirms what we all suspected…
The Golden Girls, which aired from 1985 to 1992, remains a beloved classic. However, behind the scenes, there are lesser-known stories about the iconic cast and crew. Stan Zimmerman, a staff writer during Season 1, shared some fascinating insights.
Estelle Getty, who portrayed Sophia Petrillo, was known for her quick wit on-screen but was a warm, motherly figure off-camera. Although she played the oldest Golden Girl, Getty was younger than her co-stars Bea Arthur and Betty White, which led to extensive makeup to age her. Despite struggling with early-onset dementia, Getty continued to deliver memorable performances, with cues written on her hands or taped to furniture to help her remember lines.
Zimmerman also revealed tensions between Bea Arthur and Betty White, noting their differing working styles. White, though occasionally perceived as cruel for joking during tapings, may have been giving Getty time to recover her lines. Unlike many actors, the Golden Girls regularly praised the writers in interviews, which Zimmerman appreciated. Additionally, despite fan belief, the actresses never ad-libbed; they performed the scripts exactly as written.
