Just noticed these on my girlfriends car…

Returning from a brief walk, I noticed something concerning on my girlfriend’s car—a noticeable cut on the tire’s sidewall and some scratches on the rim. At first, it seemed like a minor issue, but I quickly realized it was more serious than it appeared. The sidewall of a tire is one of the most vulnerable areas, and any damage here can be dangerous. Unlike the tread, which wears down over time, the sidewall handles much of the tire’s pressure and flexing, meaning it’s not something that can easily be patched. Sidewall cuts typically happen when tires scrape against sharp objects like curbs, potholes, or metal debris.

If the damage is deep enough to expose the inner structure, it’s critical to replace the tire immediately to avoid the risk of a blowout, especially at high speeds. The rim, too, had its fair share of scratches. While curb rash is mostly cosmetic, deep damage can weaken the rim’s integrity and even affect how the tire seals. After noticing both issues, it was clear that addressing the damage promptly was necessary for safety.
