Her husband used to beat her frequently, so she took her children and ran away from home
Cara Brookins made a courageous decision to escape her abusive marriage and provide a better life for her five children. With no construction experience and limited resources, she decided to build a house herself, relying on online tutorials and sheer willpower. In 2007, she purchased a one-acre plot for $20,000 and took out a $150,000 loan to fund the project.
Despite the odds, Cara involved her children, aged 2 to 17, in every step of the process. Her son Drew helped design the plans, while 11-year-old Jada hauled water to mix concrete. They worked together after school, with Cara hiring a firefighter with construction knowledge for more complex tasks.
By March 2009, their 3,500-square-foot home, Inkwell Manor, was finished. Though Cara initially didn’t view the project as something to be proud of, she eventually realized it symbolized not only a home but her personal growth and resilience. Her story is a powerful reminder of how determination, teamwork, and the support of loved ones can turn seemingly impossible dreams into reality.
